FIFA World Cup 2022

Qatar’s preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2022 was nothing short of transformative. Hosting the first World Cup in the Middle East, the nation invested heavily in infrastructure, hospitality, and cultural experiences to deliver a tournament that blended modern innovation with rich heritage.

Stadium of the Future

Qatar built seven brand new stadiums and renovated the iconic Khalifa International Stadium. Each venue showcased cutting-edge cooling technology and architectural designs inspired by Qatari culture:
  • Lusail Stadium hosted the final with 86,000 seats.
  • Al Bayt Stadium hosted the opening ceremony and the first match of the tournament.
  • Khalifa International Stadium was renovated for the FIFA World Cup and hosted eight matches.
  • Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium, Education City Stadium, and Al Thumama Stadium hosted matches during the tournament.
  • Stadium 974 was built from shipping containers, later dismantled after the event as a symbol of sustainability.

Transport Revolution

To handle millions of fans, Qatar launched the Doha Metro, connecting all stadiums with fast, air-conditioned trains. Importantly, fans with a Hayya Card could travel on the metro for free, making mobility seamless and affordable. New highways, bridges, and shuttle services ensured smooth travel. The compact geography meant fans could attend multiple matches in a single day, a unique feature of this World Cup.

Hospitality & Tourism

Qatar expanded its hospitality sector with luxury hotels, cruise ship accommodations, and desert dunes villages. Restaurants and cultural attractions were upgraded to welcome diverse visitors. The Hayya Card system streamed entry, offered free public transport, and gave fans access to entertainment zones.

Airport Expansion

Hamad International Airport underwent a major expansion, boosting capacity to over 70 million passengers annually. This ensured smooth arrivals and departures for the 1.2 million fans who visited during the tournament. Doha International Airport opened earlier to handle the surge in demand during the tournament.

Cultural Showcases

Qatar emphasized its heritage with art installations, music, and performances. The anthem Dreamers by BTS's Jeon Jung Kook and Fahad Al-Kubaisi symbolized unity, while fans' festivals blended global pop culture with Qatari traditions. Morgan Freeman narrated the opening ceremony alongside FIFA World Cup Ambassador Ghanim Al Muftah.

The official Soundtrack Performers include Trinidad Cardona, Davido, Aisha, Gims & Ozuna, Nora Fatehi, Balqees, Rahma Riad, Manal, Nicki Minaj, Maluma, Myriam Fares, and Lil Baby.

Artists include Diplo, Calvin Harris, Sean Paul, Trinidad Cardona, Kizz Daniel, and Nora Fatehi , who performed in Fan Festivals.

Other Musical Appearances of Artists include Post Malone, DJ Snake, Robbie Williams & J Balvin, The Black Eyed Peas, and various local artists such as Avla Like Lava, Miss Pammie, Buzzi Lee, Berneen Cereska , and others released songs honoring the World Cup.
